Caskets and Coffins
Casket Features
The casket, rectangular in profile,
bears a strong, bold appearance whilst at the same time encourages
elegant and classical designs. Traditionally a casket is designed
with a full-length lid (full couch), however some caskets feature
a half couch design - where only half the lid opens during a viewing.
All of our caskets are hand crafted with the finest materials by
specialists using premium grade solid timbers. The interior of each
casket is painstakingly and delicately draped in satin.
Coffin Features
Designed to be wider at the shoulders and tapering to each end,
a coffin is always constructed with a full-length lid. The value
and appearance of a coffin varies greatly depending upon the complexity
of the design and the materials used in its construction. A coffin
may be produced from solid timber, craft wood, particle board and
even cardboard or a combination of these materials (composite).
A basic design may have a flat lid, whilst the finer coffins may
have a triple raised (three tiered) lid. Our coffin range also features
single and double raised lid designs finished in a variety of stains
and colours.
Solid Timber
Those who appreciate natural products prefer the strength, warmth
and beauty of solid timber and the unique qualities found only in wood.
The timber used to craft our coffins and caskets is of the highest-grade
cedar, rich mahogany and plantation radiate pine. Being manufactured
from plantation timbers makes solid timber coffins and caskets more
"environmentally friendly" than those made of processed
timbers such as particle or "chip" board.
Enviroboard
Enviroboard coffins are "environmentally friendly" made
of 100% recycled paper and cardboard. The fibreboard (another name
for cardboard) used in enviroboard coffins is chosen specifically
for its strength and suitability for either burial or cremation.
Craft Wood or MDF
Craft wood coffins are constructed via a complicated process where
the wood is broken down into its fibre and then pressed into a smooth
board. As craft wood does not have a timber grain on its surface
a paper veneer bearing a timber grain design or a solid timber veneer
is glued to the outside of the coffin to give the illusion of a
timber grain. Solid timber veneer is more valuable and more authentic
than paper veneer.
Particle Board
Particle or "chip" board coffins are constructed by pressing
chips of timber together into a sheet of board. As particle board
does not have a timber grain on its surface a paper veneer bearing
a grain pattern is glued to the outside of the coffin, giving the
illusion of a timber grain. A thin layer of solid timber may also
be used to give the coffin or casket its "grainy" appearance.
This is known as a timber veneer.
